I recently checked my email and found Sparkle (a character in Honkai: Star Rail) quite interesting, so I hopped back into the game. (Yes, Sparkle. I actually forgot to publish this post after writing it, and as usual, I ended up uninstalling the game after playing for just a few days).
Maybe because it’s been a while, but this playthrough felt different. I didn’t feel like a player; instead, I felt like I was trying to reverse-engineer and understand its system architecture.
Overall Architecture
Overall, the underlying logic of Honkai: Star Rail seems to heavily practice the “high cohesion, low coupling” design principle.
Each world, main city, and even major version update is decoupled into independent modules. This layout allows for parallel game development.
Different teams can work simultaneously with different ideas. Whichever module gets finished first with the highest completion rate gets wired into the main storyline. The core engine only needs to provide a unified runtime environment; the rest is just assembling these “blocks.”
Character Design
In terms of storyline and character scheduling, they seem to use two completely different strategies:
- Mainline Characters (The Constants): They act like core singletons in the system, managed by a dedicated mainline team to ensure the integrity and logical consistency of the underlying lore.
- Side/Banner Characters (Independent Modules): Most characters only carry a self-contained story arc, which is like implementing a standard interface. Once developed, they just need to hook that interface into the main line.
- Character Invocation: Since side characters don’t need to maintain strict state consistency like mainline characters do, when the system calls them again in future plots, writers often just pull a few of their “core tags (stereotypes)” to write the dialogue.
Gameplay Design
From a gameplay perspective, this “shared middle-platform” framework is even more obvious.
Core game modes like “Simulated Universe” and “Pure Fiction,” along with major events in each version, are completely independent of the main quest in terms of underlying logic and even currency systems. It’s like treating the entire base game as a massive Spring Cloud service registry.
Different dev teams run free, packaging gameplay modes into independent “microservices.” Once tested, they are embedded directly into the game framework. This design not only isolates bugs (a bug in Simulated Universe won’t break the main quest) but also guarantees a fixed update cycle. When it’s release time, they just pull the most complete service from the dev branches and integrate it.
Trade-offs and Reflections
Of course, everything comes with a cost. The downsides of this extremely decoupled microservices architecture are obvious.
As a player, the most direct feeling is disjointedness or a “parachuted-in” vibe. When a highly independent event module or character is forced into the main story, the lack of deep contextual coupling inevitably makes things feel fragmented.
But in a massive game studio with hundreds or thousands of people, this compromise is probably inevitable. To fight “technical debt,” architects have to choose programming to an interface—defining a high-standard common protocol and having all teams enforce it ruthlessly.
Perhaps this is the ultimate form of modern industrialized content production: using an extremely rational framework to host an emotional digital dream.
